about

In his Rite of Spring I think Stravinsky offered his own Slavic garland of ragas and talas. I can't vouch for the orchestration, but gather that craft to be the most fragrant of his nosegays.

Luckily the composer is so admired that others have put in the hours to create MIDI (and gratis) versions of The Rite, which I've used to advantage; although years ago I had labored similarly with my own miniature score, keying in much of it onto my ESQ synth to learn how the piece was put together.

This series of Rite-based tunes is on the 100th anniversary of the ballet's infamous debut. Again and again its most striking passages admit (to me) a very Indian approach, with mode and rhythm to the fore. "Klouds" decocts one of his passages to a septal or medium 7-beat meter. The bass line has eight of these 7-beat bars. But the bass's phrases group the eight bars as 3 + 2 + 3.

The overall modal flavor is sun/clouds major/minor, with strings subtly darkening the sky.
