about

From a Stephen Dobyns poem about a spell cast on a man who's turned into a tree. A sculptor happens along and carves a mermaid out of the wooden man, to hang over a bar. You feel through her, silently.

A drinker glances up at the girl with the golden hair and the sea-blue eyes, the bosom scorning death, and then returns to revelry with the living.

3 beats, blues form. The bass line is transformed from a fingerpicking long ago trying for a reggae backbeat!

lyrics

When you were rude to the rich
they called the magicians three
you awoke in the dark and knew
they'd turned you into a tree

Came to like the little bird feet
and every season change
but couldn't get used to the loved ones
you'd never see again

He cut from you that billow breast
the fin, the coral nipple
the golden hair and the sea-blue eyes
and apple is the skin
